Visible from afar, the monumental St. Paul’s Church with its cathedral-like neo-Gothic architecture dominates the Munich cityscape near the Theresienwiese. Built by Georg von Hauberrisser, the architect of the New Town Hall, St. Paul’s has had an eventful history: from its magnificent construction during the Prince Regent era to its destruction in World War II and its central role in the 1960 Eucharistic World Congress.

This art guide, written by Ulrich Schäfert, head of the art pastoral department of the Archdiocese of Munich and Freising and first chairman of the German Society for Christian Art, not only illuminates the history of the building and its furnishings. It also traces the church’s path into modernity, which today makes it a unique place in the dialogue between faith and contemporary art. A richly illustrated tour reveals the furnishings and the many facets of this sacred building, which combines works by Georg Busch and Gabriel von Hackl with installations by Jochem Poensgen, Rudolf Wachter, Stefan Hunstein, and Brigitte Schwacke.

A book about St. Paul’s in Munich has also been published by Kunstverlag Josef Fink.
